I write tonight, on the eve of the election, to urge you not to be afraid, no matter which candidate wins the presidency.
Maybe you fear that the candidate you absolutely could not vote for will win tomorrow’s election. You cringe as you consider the collapse of order, the surge of anarchy, and the world government upheaval that you believe the victory of this candidate will produce.
Maybe you dread the coming winter and the combination of influenza and COVID-19 that experts predict will cause a certain climb in illness and death rates. Of course, whoever is elected will impact this by the policies this candidate chooses going forward. This is yet another reason to wring your hands with the following headline looming. If the other candidate, the one you will not vote for, wins, then surely nothing will be managed well.
Maybe you’ve found your security in your political party for decades and you fear the other side will win. You fear that the change of power, whether in the Presidency or the House or the Senate, will destroy the country.
You can’t image life with the other candidate in charge, and you fear for your finances, the peace and order of the nation, an orderly return to normality at home, school, and work due to proper management of COVID-19. Having no idea how this will turn out terrifies you.
There are any number of reasons to be afraid, and yet even more to cause you not to fear, and not to be dismayed. Remember that a just Judge set the world in motion and brings about the circumstances that impact our lives.
Psalm 75 reminds us of where our security is to be placed and in Whom:
God Will Judge with Equity
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.
We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.
2 “At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity.
3 When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants,
it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
4 I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
5 do not lift up your horn on high,
or speak with haughty neck.’”
6 For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
7 but it is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
The just Judge determines what is needed on the earth. The Lord keeps everything steady when we feel it is tottering. The Lord God lifts us up.
The Lord maintains one whom he wants to remain in office.
He puts down a leader whom he no longer desires to guide our nation.
He raises up one whom he will use to accomplish his purposes.
The Lord determines who will win.
All of this is for the working of God’s will, to do good and not to harm. He has a purpose. The Lord knows which one holding the office of president will cause us to grow and to turn to him, to rely on him for all that is good and right. The Lord knows which candidate will bring about what must occur in our history. He may inspire record turnout in our nation simply to accomplish his will.The Lord knows which candidate will bring about what must occur in our history. All of the stretching and the strengthening will be used by the Lord to accomplish our growth.
No matter the outcome, the Lord has determined it.
He does all things well.
